After Nirbhaya incident occurred, the whole nation was in angst and fire, with numerous candle marches taking place all over the country in almost every town and city across the length and breadth of India. It was seen as a big event nationally as well as internationally. The western media published it with same attentiveness as Indian media. The protests were rather big as they came as a part of series after Anna movement in which all country was pushed into a non violent revolution cum agitation lead by Gandhian Anna Hazare.
The flames hadn't been quenched and they were ignited after the Nirbhaya Rape Incident again. A girl in Delhi named Nirbhaya was gang raped in a moving transport bus by the driver conductor and their accomplices. Not only was she raped, but she was left to die naked in dirty sewer naked along with her male companion who was beaten but escaped death. She on the other side couldn't survive much even after Sonia Gandhi personally flew her to Singapore Hospital to save her. The damage had already been done also through a political perspective. The UPA government was seen as the enemy of women and the cause of insecurity that women have to face in their everyday life.
But was it the government who was or is responsible for such grievous crimes against women in our country or is the mindset of our thousand years old nation which takes pride in being conservative. The question still looms in front of the whole nation. Who is really responsible ? The People, The Nation or The Government. Are laws enough to prevent such crimes ? Or is The mindset is what that needs to be changed to stop seeing women as liabilities or a mere object.
We all need to question ourselves, How well do we really see women in front of our eyes. Forget the women in general but just the woman standing in your front in the queue or in the bus who is sandwiched between a couple males trying to feel her through every way possible. When in our personal capacities we will stop seeing women as weaklings, and give them their due respect then only such incidents would stop and our country can be better place for women native or foreign. Tourism will also prosper when female tourists stop getting being stared in our country.
